Is Offline Advertising Dead?

We are now well into the information age, and marketing methods have adapted to this fact. Any person who uses the internet or any form of social media will have noticed advertising slowly encroaching on their end-user experience. With digital marketing tactics evolving each day, it is easy to think that ‘traditional advertising’ – done offline such as banner printing – has had its day. But, has it?

The discussion of traditional marketing’s demise has been a hot topic within the marketing industry since the turn of the century, when it became glaringly obvious that the internet was not going away and that we were at the beginning of a digital revolution.

Although there is no definition, traditional marketing is widely understood to be the types of advertising or promotion which are done offline – such as leaflet and banner printing, billboards and signs – which was a serious market some twenty years ago.

In fact, it still is, but it is hard to ignore that traditional marketing is of less relevance in the modern world and that it is no longer the primary focus of marketers. Businesses of all types operating across all industries are under increasing pressure to have an online presence, which is vital in-order to survive in the modern commercial environment.

Marketers are well aware of this, and over a quarter of professional marketers openly admit to reducing their budget for traditional marketing.

It is hardly surprising. Social media marketing offers a worldwide platform to which the entire world is connected, bustling with opportunities and innovative advertising techniques. Businesses are constantly battling with each other to take advantage of the internet and produce marketing campaigns in the hopes of going ‘viral’.

Companies and brands are always trying to connect with their consumers – they always have – and the internet makes this so much easier; it is only natural that they evolved their marketing and advertising campaigns to engage an online audience.

Is Offline Advertising Finished?

If you go for a drive around your city, switch on your TV or look through the newspaper, you will see that traditional marketing is still very much alive. In any major city, you will see discarded leaflets and promotional materials, large billboards and screens adorned with consumer brands.

Although traditional marketing has certainly had a fall from grace with the rise of the information age, it is far from dead and will never go away, ever. Companies still rely highly on offline advertising and go to great lengths in their advertising campaigns.
